Dennis Lee Hougham

1 dead, 1 jailed in Attica case
By DAVE ROEPKE <mailto:roepked@news.dmreg.com?Subject=Online: 1 dead, 1 jailed in Attica case> Register Staff Writer 05/05/2002

One man is dead, another is in jail and a third is on the lam in connection with the invasion Monday of an Attica farmhouse.
Dennis Lee Hougham, 27, of Des Moines died early Saturday after he shot himself in the head when Des Moines police and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agents tried to arrest him. The agents arrived about 4:40 a.m. at a house at 2906 Sampson St. Hougham was pronounced dead at the scene.
Friday afternoon, Mahaska County deputies arrested David LaCaze, 20, of Oskaloosa at his home for his alleged role in the home invasion, Marion County Sheriff Marvin Van Haaften said.
A few hours later, at about 8 p.m., a Marion deputy was at the Wal-Mart in Knoxville with an arrest warrant for Jerry Pyburn, 21, of Knoxville. Van Haaften said that when the deputy identified himself, Pyburn, who worked at the Wal-Mart, jumped over a counter and ran out the front door.
"No one expected it to come down to this," Van Haaften said. "This is a bizarre one."
Pyburn was still at large Saturday night, Van Haaften said. He was last seen near the Mile-Long Bridge north of Knoxville. Van Haaften said Marion deputies and conservation workers were searching for Pyburn with Iowa State Patrol troopers, using infrared scanners that can detect heat.
The sheriff said having Pyburn loose was frightening for the mostly rural residents of Marion County.
"This one was right in our back yard," Haaften said. "A lot of people are locking their doors and arming themselves."
Van Haaften said Pyburn is 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs about 180 pounds. The sheriff said he might have gone to Des Moines, where he has family.
"You never know exactly what to make of these sightings," Van Haaften said.
Van Haaften said Hougham, the man who shot himself, had at least one prior conviction on weapons charges.
"We got from different people that (Hougham) really liked accumulating weapons," Van Haaften said.
The sheriff said investigators had uncovered weapons and other evidence that led them to believe Hougham, Pyburn and LaCaze entered the two-story farmhouse of Tim and Rhonda DeGeest about 2 a.m. Monday, tied up Tim DeGeest and his 16-year-old daughter, Danielle, and shot Tim and Rhonda DeGeest before leaving the house. The DeGeests were released from the hospital the next day.
Pyburn and LaCaze, who are cousins, each face five felony charges: terrorism, two counts of attempted murder, kidnapping, assault while participating in a felony that causes serious injury, and first-degree burglary. Bond for LaCaze was set at $500,000.
Van Haaften said he thought the motive for the break-in could be described in two words: "money and marijuana."
The sheriff declined to say whether the DeGeests were being investigated. He said that especially for a small department, violent crimes have a higher priority than drug investigations.
The motive"says there's more work to be done in an entirely different direction," the sheriff said.
