Notes

Michael Hougham

Arthur Hougham has Michael as son of Michael and Edith Austen and that Jane Brooke is his second wife.

Clearly there is a Michael in Thomas' will, I think Arthur is mistaken - RY

Michael Hougham

Arthur Hougham has Michael as being married to Elizabeth Joade and to Jane Brook (see later).

Marian Pratt has Elizabeth as the wife of Michael the son of Thomas

Arthurs notes are as follows.

Baptised Ash 2 Oct 1569. son and heir, mentioned in his fathers will 10 Dec 1583. He inherited land and property at Eastry by will of John Brooke dated 1 May 1582 Died July 1594 Buried with his brother Richard in Ash. Memorial there to him gives that he was of a tall stature and comely person. His will mentions "my wife Janet and my son Brooke" But not children by first wife.

Arthur has children listed by first wife so did they die by date of will? were they excluded? or has Arthur got it wrong.

This tree goes with the Marian Pratt version that the children of Elizabeth are the result of the marriage with the other Michael

Do the following notes pertain to this Michael?
West Kent Quarter Sessions Records Indictments
FILE - File of indictments for Mids. 1595. - ref. QM/SI/1595/2 [n.d.] item: Michael Huffam of Ash, yeoman, for planting a hedge in the highway at Brookestrete gutter in Ash. - ref. QM/SI/1595/2/30 - date: April 1595

FILE - File of indictments for gaol delivery sessions Epiphany 1597/8. - ref. QM/SI/1598/1 [n.d.] item: Simon Moumford of Preston, labourer, for escaping having been placed in the stocks by Rich. Joyner, constable of Preston hundred on suspicion of stealing a bushel of wheat worth 5s. from Michael Huffam at Stourmouth ['Sturmould']. [Asks for benefit of clergy but "does not read"] - ref. QM/SI/1598/1/5 - date: 1 April 1597

Out of the numerous descendants of Stephen Hougham and Benetta Brookes- those I have charted are the only ones who carry down names of Michael,Richard and Henry. .
As stated before in my records, Hasted in "A Corner of Ash" and Planche in his history, and Suckling In " A Forgotten Past" place erroneously Michael Hougham 1569-1596 ."with Elizabeth Joade as a 1st wife, and Janet Brooks as 2nd.-which, dates of birth .marriage, and Wills all contradict. . I place that Michael and the one who md. Elizabeth. Joade as 2nd cousins.

Richard, brother of Michael who md.Janet Brook, dated his Will 1606,and in it mentions among witnesses a Henry and a Richard Houglam and the only Henry and Richard among my numerous on file are the 2nd cousins. Both lines owned property in same parts of Kent~-the Chart on other side showns how later similar names were bonn after l606.

He mentions a Gabriel Pordage.and a Henry Harflete- On file I have a Bennett Hougham md. Henry Harflete a widower, whose 1st wife was Dorcas Pordage, he also mentions a Wm Sollye, he had a relative who md, Stephen Solly They are all connections on his line, But there is no Henry and Richard on his line to fit the years of his Will These second cousins are the only ones known who do fit the years.
To find-wills "of Michael Hougham and Elizabeth Joades line is the only way to prove these connections
. Richard of Goodnestone d.l686 or his son Michael who d. 1695 are only clue. (got them in 19??)

The difficulty here always arises then who are Henry Hougham who md.Margaret Owere. He is given as of Preston leasing land in Minster.and his wife as of Minster .and they have a son bn at Minster l644 and no others, there This couple were md. 1643 at Minster,(which would make Henry born abt.l620) and historians have placed him in an impossible position on their chart-that is in "

He is buried in South Transept. A marble memorial surmounted by the coat of arms is on the wall and a brass memorial plate on the floor marks the place. the plate reads " Here lieth buried the bodies of Michael and Richard Hougham, sonnes of Michael Hougham. Michael died in July 1594 and Richard died October1606.Richard married Elizabeth, daughter of Edward Saunders by whom he had three sonnes Michael Edward and Solomon and one daughter named Ann all livinge the were men both of a tall stature and comley persons, besides were well esteemed among all sorts of people, both for their vertuous lives and also in their younge years for there good and thriftie government, not of themselves onlie but also they were a good stay in the parish among ther neighbours

"A Corner of Kent--J.R. Planche"

"A Corner of Kent [page 404]" ... the name, like those of Paramore and Hougham,
is still found amongst the labouring classes and in the humbler ranks of the
community. But "apprenticeship doth not extinguish gentry," and the poorest
and lowliest members of these ancient English families may have the barren
satisfaciton of writing the proud motto of "Fuimus" under the excutcheon they
have inherited from ancestors who owned the broad acres they now till, in the
times of the Plantagenets and the tudors."

Another history says that Richard died of the plague at sandwich and as no one with plague was allowed to be buried in a church they hedged the law a bit by putting him in a doorway in St Marys church Sandwich after bricking up the doorway into the church first, then pushing his remains in next. They bricked up the outside so he was buried neither inside or outside the church. This story is better attributed to Solomon the son of Richard.

Anne.Elizabeth, and Mary Bettenham, daughters of John Bettenham, gent, and Anna his wife-her late niece, deceased.Richard and Thomas Follard, sons of her niece Anne Follard of London(widow).Francis daughter of said Anne Follard,Margaret and Anne Francke, daughters of her cousin Elizabeth Francke, her nephew Solomon Hougham son of her brother Solomon, which said brother was then beyond the sea-Solomon son of her nephew Henry Hougham, Ann Hougham daughter of her nephew Mr William Hougham of London,Susan,Elizabeth,Margaret.Bennett, and Magdaline, daughters also of her nephew Mr William Hougham, and Michael youngest son of William at age of 21.-then to his father William,Richard and Henry Hougham her nephews, sons of her brother Solomon." . •
Note;-The above is full of valuable genealogical material, and has been of great use in connecting this family line. Anne Hougham who drew up the will was not married—being single, and having no sisters.her nieces and_nephews were of her brothers,—so the Lasher and Follard family would be the daughters of her nephew William Hougham of London.
