According to a footnote in Planche's "Corner of Kent" Richard was a son of Robert IV. see -page 100 BUT pages 100 and 390 place him as a son of Robert III.
Planche's "Corner of Kent" pase 390.''The 4th Robert de Hougham is said to have had a younger brother named Richard, from who descended the Houghams of Ash. We have not been fortunate enough to find a trace of this Richardbut in the MSS.we have so often ouoted, marked R. 27. in the College of Arris, there are abstracts of several charters .
unfortunately not dated, but apparently of the 13th Century ----- Nevertheless a Richard Houghamwas Prior of Dover A.D.1350."Prior of Dover 1350 He is recorded as of Ash near Sandwich, in the College of Arms MS27.
Richard de Hecham and Geoffrey the Dean and Chapter of St Pauls London.... premises in Stebbage (Is this the
Richard?)There are no doubt other children in these families.and I have a lot of names running co-eval, but lack needful facts to
link them in their places of correct position in the line.
Richard-the Prior of Dover in 1350 A.D. -A prior is the head of a Priory,a Priory is a convent for either sex,and is
next in rank below an Abbey. So Richard was evidently a Roman Catholic of high rank
. The averaneh ancestors of Hougham supporters of Convent and Abbeys, and had a Nun listed amongst their daughters.
Many instances are recorded between Abbotts of France and Houghams of Kent, in land agreements etc.
follow down the Houghwn line-there are many Ministers recorded in their numbers.Ireland History of Kent Vo 2 P136 - 7 also Hasteds "The place called the graves was also located in the manor of Hougham it was given its name because it was the burial place of hundreds of people who died from the plague - the dreaded black death
It was called the black death and came to england's shores after sweeping over europe. It spared neither man nor beast and so dreadful were its ravages it is estimated that perhaps a third or one half of the english people perished. We read that in 1348 - 9 some parishes had 3 or 4 vicars appointed in one year. Two archbishops of Canterbury died in the scourge during the same period. In sall villages 300 of 400 pleple,30 or 40 families from the eldest to youngest member were victims to the plague. We find monastaries in which every soul from the Prior to the youngest novice died and the houses were thus left entirely desolate.
In connectioon with the above I found a record for AD 1339 of Black Death "Ric de Hetchem Die see lucie Virg - A monk
He is recorded as son of the above Simon and of Elmstone in the College of Arms MS27. Elmstone is next to Ash. He added lands of Elmstone to those of Weddington as both continue to his descendants according to will given 4 generations later.
MHP I have n Latin 16 Feb 1489 - Robard Howham of Ham Bur at St Georges Ham Churchyard
"To Agnes my wife 1/2 pt of my graynys -Redma Will and Harrie my sons they to be excrs."
This Robert is suggested by Marian Pratt in the Hougham/Hurley family record.
According to Arthur Hougham in his record, Robert of Elmstone is the son of Simonus. He verifies this by reference to MS27 in the College of Arms.
This Robert is included to assist future researchers to determin the accuracy of either histories.
Planche - Robertus de Hougham filius Simonius (Orbit in Ashe)
He is recorded on the Knights Visitation of Kent which was taken 1619-1621 by John Philipot Roughe Dragon Marshall and Deputy to Wiilliam Camden Clarenceaux. It was made to establish the ancestry and pedigree of those at that time entitled to bear the arms tricked. The official copy is in the college of Arms and bears the press mark c16.In it the pedigree for Hougham has added to the coat of Arms a quartering which was sometime quartered afterwards by the decendants
He is given as father of Solomon
He is recorded as son of Robert de Hougham.Heralds College of Arms gives descent from Robert of Robert
Irelands History of Kent records a John Hougham as his father, given the above, this is almost certainly incorrect
A forgotten past gives John and Christian as parents of William without any proof..
MHP - I have on file William Hochem of Elmstone mentioned in Will of John ST Nicholas, also I have Elizabeth Hucham or Hugyham - widow- of St Marys Canterbury bur 1473 Seeing that Elizabeth was of Sandwich and St Marys is at Sandwich (and the approximation of b abt 1496 supplied by UTAH never did fit) I believe the foregoing references apply here also John St Nicholas was a friend probably a relative and his figure appears in stained glass window at Ashe next to Solomon son of William and Elizabeth Hougham, AS to different spelling of surname it has been spelled 19 ways. It was spelled two ways in will of Eluzabeth shown above
William de Hougham lived in time of Henry Vlll . It is probable, but not proven that Elizabeth may have been surnamed Sanders. The biggest reason for thinking this-is that the coat of arms of Sanders was worn in connection with that of Hougham long before the time of Richard Hougham who md Elizabeth Sanders. Richard is 2nd grt grd son of William.. (M.H.Pratt)
Correction on dates supplied by Utah Genealogical Society.
In the will of John St Nicholas dated 18 June 1462 there is mention of William Hougham of Elmstone. John St Nicholas is the figure in Ash church window next to Solomon Hougham, the son of William.
In Will mentioned above William Hochen,as Feoffee.
St Mary's,Cant.I have Elizabeth Hucham or Hugyhon-wldow-Of St Mary's Canterbury.buried 1473.-Seeing Elizabeth was
of Sandwich, and St Mary's is at Sandwich, and Canterbury is the diocese over most of Eastern Kent churches. Ash Church window. The effigy of Solomon Hougham is in the church window at Ashe, dressed in coat of armour, and re presenting a kneeling; warrior, with spurs etc.and as a knight. There are four of these painted, stained windows, all beside each other. Next to Solomon Hougham is John St Nicholas who was a friend.probably a relative.
He is recorded in the Knights Visittion of Kent 1619 as Son of William Hougham (Note "de" dropped) and as father of Stephen.
He is pictured in stainded glass in St Nicholas church Ash but it is not the original. A drawing of the original is in the British Museum as additional MSS no 5479
It should be noted that on his tabard are the arms newly acquired for quartering with the original coat of Hougham and that he is depicted with spurs signifying that he had received Knighthood. It was so customary for the Knights to qualify for Knighthood that special use of title was seldom used in documents
His will is in the Archdeaconry Register of Canterbury Vol 13 folio 172. It was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in 1518. He describes himself in it as Solomon Hougham of Preston (in Ash)
He asks to be buried in Preston Church. He leaves stock to the church of Ash to keep an obit once a year on 5 Aug .
The will records that he ownes the Manor of Weddington in Ash ,estates at Ware estates in Nell parish, He names his children as Stephen, Thomas, William, Solomon, Joan
Suggested by historians, not yet proved -MHP
Solomon (or perhaps John) Hougham
Suggested by Planche not yet proved -MHP
He is on Knights visitation of 1619 as son of Solomon Hougham and thus "Stephen Hougham of Ash predict.and as father of Michael Hougham of Weddington and Richard Hougham of Eastry.

He bequeathes to his wife for her life time and then to his son Michael "The messuage in which they live various parcels of land in Ash and various leases of land. He bequeathes to son Michael The Manor of Waddington and lands called Rawborowe, lands at PeteEnd, Land at Middle Marsh Land at Salts, One Messuage called Baa or the Baywith its Gardens and the lands called Bayfield in Icham.

To his brother Thomas land at Preston "Which I had on the Death of my mother""The family of Hougham, a knightly race, taking their name from the manor of
Hougham, Huffam or Hicham, as it is spelt in Domesday, near Dover. In Hicham
or Hougham, a suling of land was held in the Conqueror's reign by one Baldwin;
but whether an ancestor of this family or not, we cannot pretend to say.The parish of Hougham was part of the lands given by the Conqueror toFulbert
de Lucy, called "of Dover," for the Barony of Fulbert, as it was called, of
which Chillam Castle was the chief seat, or "caput baroniae"; and we
consequently find Hougham held by knight's service in the time ofEdward III."

Daughter of John Brooke of Brooke Street Ash. She was buried in Ash church 9 June 1560
She is recorded in Knights visitation 1619 as wife of Stephen Hougham and after the death of her nephew, she or her descendants become heirs of the Brooke coat of Arms as he is the last male Brooke
The same thing is explained by the Brook wills. John Brook her father was father of John Brooke who was married to her husban s sister Joan. John and Joan had a son John who died 16 Jan 1583 will proved 7 Feb 1583. Thus from 1583 the Brooke coat is quartered with Hougham The son of Benetta (michael died in Dec 1583) entitled to the quartering as were all his descendants.
